They say young mothers are also three times more likely to experience it but the numbers could be higher because it's believed many suffer in silence.
In a documentary called Why Mummy's Sad, BBC Radio 1Xtra has been talking to women to see why they've been affected by the condition and what help is available. Read more here.
Were you or someone you know affected by post-natal depression? How long did it last and how was it treated?

I guess the problem of depression is more in western countries because of single families & no one to talk to....Having a baby is a big change in life, for some it can be really tough....I was lucky enough to have my MIL help me with my both babies, so u can get enough sleep, warm food & just in case if u feel like taking fresh air U don't have to worry about packing the baby bag.....getting baby ready...taking the stroller out....U can just handover the baby in the caring hands & go for a walk......which is very necessary b'coz the main reason of depresion is Mom's have to totally give up there lives atleast for sometime...once u have a baby...So u need some company, simple solution...that's what I think...
btw thanks for stopping by my blog....I know it's been long time....I'm really kind of off from blogging now a days....but thanks...

I think you are raising a good point. Support is essential at that point and without that things can get difficult. Thanks for the personal insight :)
Assalam-alaikam Sis,
Oh yeah been there, although a mild dose and lifted after about 4 months alhamdulillah. Still horrible htough and not something our community knows how to deal with often. For instance the response of some sisters that there is no such thing as depression in Islam :(
I agree with Spice, support is a big part of recovery as is patience, time, people understanding and strong engagement from midwives or health visitors.
UmmS,
Such an honour to have you on here :)
Is it more common with the 1st child? Are there any underlying reasons behind it? And is there anyway a woman can prepare/prevent herself from getting into such a situation?
