I have been trying to increase the intake of lentils and vegetables, so today I made Urad Dhal with rice, using the recipe below, and it turned out great. The bonus with this recipe is that it is quick because you microwave the lentils so they are cooked in approximately 15 minutes. With a rice cooker in the other hand, I had dinner ready in less than 30 minutes. Go Nigella ... :)

By the way, I'm just curious: what's the difference between the round whole red chili versus the long ones? I notice that my MIL always buys the longer ones.

I have no idea. I tried googling but I can't seem to find anything. I forgot to mention this but I didn't have fresh red chillies, so I just added 1 tsp of dry red chillies to the vagar, and it was fine.
One thing though, generally the smaller the chillies are the hotter they are. So if you substitute with the long ones, probably best to put less.
